Srila Prabhupada Encourages Musical Creativity
BY DASANUDAS VANACARI
EDITORIAL, Aug 20 (VNN) Hare Krsna Prabhus,
All glories to Srila Prabhupada! He knew perfectly how to engage everyone in Krsna's service. He encouraged my devotee musician friend Nava Jauvana das Prabhu with these wonderfully humble and pleasing words:
24th August, 1971
My dear Juba, Please accept my blessings. I have heard your tape and it is very nicely presented. It appears that you are a perfect artist in this line and although I am not expert in singing, still I can appreciate your mode of presentation. Your attempt to present the tape to me also is very auspicious. In Srimad Bhagavatam it is said that everyone's talented occupation shall be tested for perfection when used for the satisfaction of the Supreme Lord or his representative. Certainly you have got a great creditable artistic talent and if you employ these activities for the service of the Lord, your life will be successful. I wish that you steadily remain in the association of our devotees. Gradually be fixed up in Krishna Consciousness and gradually all your talents will be fruitful in Krishna Consciousness. Hoping this will meet you in good health. Your ever well-wisher, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Janmastami is almost here, and I'm so excited to finally have MP3s of all my Vedic music on the Web! If you want to hear my Vedic music, go to http://mp3.com/artists/31/david_bruce_hughes.html. If you want to learn more about the Vrndavan-lila Cycle, a major recording project, go to http://www.mindspring.com/~dbhughes/.
MP3.com is a wonderful resource for Vedic musicians. You can see CD covers, read descriptions of CDs and selections, and listen to complete RealAudio versions of all the album cuts. If you like them, MP3.com will take your order online, custom-burn your CDs and ship them directly to your mailbox! Here's what's available:
RagaJazz contains the preview cuts Khammaj Jazz and Sandhya Vibhasa from the Vrndavan-lila Cycle. It is a premiere of the RagaJazz style I am pioneering.
RagaJazz extends the subtleties of the raga system into the jazz improvisation space. If jazz musicians have been so creative with 2 or 3 scales and time signatures, what could they do with 64? Each of the cuts on RagaJazz is over 20 minutes long! To preview or purchase RagaJazz, go to http://ecom.mp3.com/cgi-bin/order.cgi?cd_id=15181&srclk=ld.
Vipralambha is four long, slow, deeply meditative, passionately romantic flute ragas in the mood of love in separation. To preview or purchase Vipralambha, go to http://ecom.mp3.com/cgi-bin/order.cgi?cd_id=11906&srclk=ld
Kalachandji is a selection of early mantra-rock and mantra-jazz compositions I composed in Dallas in 1997. To preview or purchase Kalachandji, go to http://ecom.mp3.com/cgi-bin/order.cgi?cd_id=14007&srclk=ld.
Son of RagaJazz has a long 60's style jam, Gopinath Free Jazz, that wouldn't fit on the online version of RagaJazz. A lot of people really like this jam.
It also contains other early RagaJazz studies that wouldn't fit on my other online albums. To preview or purchase Son of RagaJazz, go to http://ecom.mp3.com/cgi-bin/order.cgi?cd_id=15181&srclk=ld.
I hope all the devotees experience great pleasure hearing these selections inspired by our Krsna Conscious philosophy and the pastimes of Radha-Krsna.
All glories to your confidential ecstatic loving devotional service, and have a happy Janmastami!
Your servant,
Dasanudas Vanacari (David Bruce Hughes)
