Separatism Is A Cancer

BY YADUNANDANA PADA DASA

EDITORIAL, Jul 28 (VNN) — Dear Hridayananda Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga. All glories to Sri Sri Radha Krsna.

Om Hrim Shraum ugram-viram Mahavishnu
Jvalantam Sarvtau-mukham Nrsimha
Bhishanam-Bhadram Mrtyur Mrtyam Nama-myaham

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Nrshimha who is Maha Vishnu himself in this horrible form, who is everywhere, with many many mouths, who is the strength of the strong, who is death to death. "

Thank you for your response. I am very glad that you have been making attempts at building bridges with leaders from the Gaudiya Vaishnava groups. We also have to concentrate efforts on building bridges within ISKCON. It is my experience, and it stands to reason, that perseverance is the most effectual manner of dealing with stubborn stains. It is also equally true that 'charity begins at home'. This separatism is a stain that we are all guilty of propagating, some through sound, some through silence, others through example. In addition, according to logic and Shastra we can understand that this equation is a cosmic test that will separate the 'men from the boys', and shed light on the purity and sincerity of all those involved. Those who are sincere and whose intentions are pure will work towards harmony, on the other hand, those who have personal agendas will propagate this tribal mentality.

I would like to ask for your support and involvement in continuing and propagating this dialogue to anyone who will listen. I have received many wonderful responses to these letters (and the postings on VNN), from devotees of all Maths who share our sentiments. There have been many attempts at unification in the past, but they all withered and vanished. Deductive reasoning infers here that the next step is a relentless persistence that will burrow itself deep and begin gnawing at this cancer. If we persist we can start a movement, so that others will speak out and share their sentiments on these issues with the leaders.

It is possible as you say that the next generation may have better luck. But this dilemma is here now. That makes it our problem and our solution to find. As I mentioned in my previous letters, I have a conviction that cohesion will take place among the groups as the fabric of "The Movement" is woven. Nothing will stop this and those who do not cooperate will simply be left on the side holding their sticks. However, in the meantime there are disciples and aspiring disciples being impressed. "Preaching is the essence" dictates that as disciples of Srila Prabhupada we should make it our mission to make lots of noise and usher out this infection. There is only one movement, Lord Chaitanya's Movement.

I have not yet gotten a response from either Narayana Maharaja or Govinda Maharaja. I know they are very busy. We also know that Puri Maharaja is very ill and we have been praying for him nightly. I have asked them directly for their advice on this issue, so that we can hear it directly from them and not from their advocates, representatives, or liaisons.

I humbly ask that you support my efforts by sending these dialogues to the members of VAST. If we can get all those who concur to flood the mailboxes of the leaders, maybe we can make a difference.

Hoping this meets you in health

Your servant

"Although I do remember Srila Prabhupada's instructions for us to stay away from His god brother's at that time, because "you would become confused", He also taught about "time and circumstance".

There are many inter-Math marriages, families, friendships, Sankirtans, and even businesses. These situations are growing and expanding. The unification is already going on by the Grace of Lord Chaitanya. We can either choose to be part of this service or we can wait for it to become the underlying theme and then follow behind."
Thank you for these comments. Many of our hopes are quite similar. Again, in the interest of being honest with you, I must say the following:
After merely observing these issues for years, I made sincere efforts during the last several months to build bridges with certain leading preachers of the Gaudiya Math. I am confident that my approach was liberal, open, and respectful.
The result: I am somewhat more cynical now than before. Why? The response I encountered.
My conclusion: we should continue to do all we can, but perhaps the next generation of devotees will do better than us. With best wishes,

Your servant,
Hridayananda das Goswami "
