Controversy Explored: 'Sri Guru Parampara'

BY SWAMI B.V. TRIPURARI

EDITORIAL, Feb 4 (VNN) — (from Sanga wfd@efn.org) Recently I published a 50 page booklet entitled 'Sri Guru Parampara: Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, Heir to the Esoteric Life of Kedarnatha Bhaktivinoda'. The booklet deals with the controversy surrounding Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura's conception of a siksa guru parampara and his approach to raganuga bhakti that distinguishes him from other Gaudiya Vaishnava sects.

This controversy is perhaps the greatest challenge to the faith of those in the lineage of Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura. Indeed, some of his closest followers lost faith in him in the face of this controversy after his departure from the world. The core issues I discuss in this booklet are those that influenced a number of Prabhupada's (A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami) disciples to reject him. I believe this booklet makes a strong case for the authenticity of the lineage of Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura with regard to these important issues.

In my experience, the vast majority of the devotees in ISKCON are unaware of the issues involved in this controversy. However, they are today again surfacing and need to be dealt with comprehensively. My aim in publishing this essay is to help enable devotees in our Gaudiya Saraswat sampradaya, both those affiliated with ISKCON and those outside of ISKCON, to reach an informed opinion on the subject and be better equipped to defend our parampara when these issues arise in the preaching field. I have in mind a book that will go into all of the issues in depth, and I am researching the material at this time. In this regard, I would welcome any assistance or information that you might be able to provide.

In the booklet, I have drawn certain conclusions regarding the present day followers of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. These are my own opinions involving a call for greater unity, the need for boiling the milk for greater understanding of our own theological heritage, and preaching the message of Mahaprabhu as envisioned by Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura and his glorious disciple, our beloved Srila Prabhupada. Otherwise, I believe I have accurately represented core issues of the controversy and justified Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura's claim to the esoteric life of Bhaktivinoda Thakura.
