Prayer to the Founder-Acharya
Prabhupada, please hear my prayer It isn't right, it isn't fair I shouldn't write like this, to you But I don't know what else to do Great minds conspire with themselves a lot To avoid the cure they have always sought My brothers are seeking more and more Salvation in the video store My sisters are living unprotected Bitter that they've been neglected Our children whom you gave support Abused, they sue in open court And more and more often what they do Is try to pin the blame on you Instead of Bhagavata's illuminating light We watch TV late into the night Do computer games or an Internet search But everything leaves us that much worse They'll offer flowers, with formality And prostrate stiffly, before thee It's what's expected that they do After all, I've done it too Pretended worship all the while Meditating on my profile Anxious to make the political move So my status might improve And all the leaders will approve Eager to bend you to their will After all, the soul can't kill And their agenda they compile Taking much care not to rile Those above the rank and file Instead of chanting sixteen rounds Some of us are keeping hounds And taking them on morning walks Headsets listening to your talks With each footstep, your samadhi rocks Sannyas, it's no longer for life But it helps us find a suitable wife Better to weather maternal strife Than keep the vow once took for life Razor's edge does not mean knife It's money this and money that And money, how is goes! But it's the dollar wrapped around our heart That's the source of all our woes We read books on how to cope with stress We're very concerned about how we dress We secretly yearn for the comforting caress But somehow we never get it Because we cannot give it We are seeking trust and love Our management is push and shove We seek guidance from above But we cannot take it If it comes, then we mistake it Thinking that it wasn't meant for me Chanting cannot set us free We pray to be safe from harm But we react with alarm When someone preaches bhagavata dharm And he's not one of ours He's come in someone else's cars Our minds conspire to reject Any cure that we suspect Might just make us better But doesn't follow to the letter Of something you said in the past In a half-remembered Bhagavatam class Referring to something someone asked But now that doesn't matter You taught us to think for ourselves Not to be slaves and not to be elves To finally achieve our love of God By your gift of trust and not the rod Not legislation to enforce The grounds by which wives may divorce Their husbands And then they can take new ones It's very confusing to their sons But they say, it must be done Their minds conspire to reject Any cure that they respect If there are burdensome aspects That cause them to inquire It this really required? For all my life this I aspired? It's a long road a tough road It's heaped with wreck and mire If they betray before the end Will you still lift them higher? After all, you never were a liar I've always believed whatever you said I'm yours living, I'm yours dead To your service only I aspire Their minds conspire to reject as naught The very things you had always taught But they do not listen They think something is missing Somewhere, snakes are hissing No, oh no, it's only me Hasten master, I pray thee Kindly, kindly, make me free Save me safe from doubt I see Is swarming all around me Waiting there to drown me Radha-Krishna, wait for me! Give me please the eyes to see Make me all that I can be Lift me up from on my knee To the privilege of your company That's the path to make me free That's the true prosperity Father, father, hurry me Don't let me be a quitter And don't let me be bitter All criticism, overcome Another task That must be done Save me from those who lack courage All they can do is discourage They can't give me love of God That only comes from Prabhupada.
