EDITORIAL, Jan 24 (VNN) — Appearance of Gopal Bhatta Gosvami

Disappearance of Srila Ramananda Kaviraja (1/30/1983)

Talk by Srila B.R. Sridhara dev Gosvami Maharaja

Transcribed by Urukrama dasa (Srila Bhakti Promod Puri Gosvami Maharaja).

Gopal Bhatta, he was the son of Venketa Bhatta in whose house Mahaprabhu stayed for four month continuously. On the banks of Kaveri rive, Sri Rangam the highest Holy place of Ramanuja Sapmradaya. Mahaprabhu visited Venkata Bhatta for four months during month of Caturmasya. His son was Gopal Bhatta and his brother was Probhodananda, both of them followed Mahaprabhu in Vrindavan by call of Mahaprabhu. Probhodananda, Gopal Bhatta's previous guru and uncle, paternal uncle, he lived in Sri Kunda, Kamya Van in Vrindavan, and Gopal Bhatta he lived in Vrindavan in association of Sri Rupa and Sanatan he was asked by Mahaprabhu to do so.

Gopal Bhatta came once from Vrindavan to Puri to see Mahaprabhu, Sri Caitanya Dev, and Mahaprabhu asked him: ÔGo stay in Vrindavan under the guidance of Rupa and Sanatana.' He did that. He established a temple there Radha Raman Gera that is present in Vrindavan, which is the Temple of Gopal Bhatta. First he came from the vistadvaita vad but he joined this Gaudiya sampradaya. It is said that he started his temple with Salagram but once some merchant came to visit Vrindavan he offered many jewels and ornaments to the Deities and Gopal Bhatta thought, my Deity is only a Salagram if it might been a Deity Figure then I could get ornaments and decorate my Lord. It is said, that in the morning he saw that from Salagram a Deity has come out, Sri Krishna Murti, and just on the back in the part that Salagram is connected. That news was spread and the greatness of the Deity and the Temple had much admiration and propaganda. Radha Raman was the name of the Deity.

At present we may find the householder disciples of Gopal Bhatta they are living there and continuing the seva. Generally they are scholars, study Sanskrit and different scriptures. Jiva Gosvami has written Bhagavat Sandharbha, he has mentioned there this original copy, ruff copy of Gopal Bhatta, he fist systematized them, he put them in the system. First estimology that is Tattva Sandharbha then Bhagavat Sandharbha, Paramartha Sandharbha, Krishna Sandharbha, Bhakti Sandharbha, Priti Sandharbha. Six parts or Sat Sandharbha that was compiled by Jiva Gosvami and there is a reference that Gopal Bhatta left some notes, scattered here and there, and I had taking consulting the notes of Gopal Bhatta and I am making a system produce this book Bhagavat Sandharbha. Sanatana Gosvami Prabhu compiled Hari Bhakti Vilas the Vaisnava Titis, Deity worship, formalities of Vaisnava dharma, how to fast on Janmastami day, how to managed worship of the different Deities all this things are mentioned in Hari Bhakti Vilas, or Vaisnava Sruti how a devotee will pass his days, how Harinam should be taken details has been given in Hari Bhakti Vilas and there it is also mentioned that I compiled this book with the help of one South Brahmin Gopal Batter, with his corrections I am preparing commentary of it. Both Sanatan and Jiva refered to Gopal Bhatta for there books.

Gopal Bhatta came from Ramanuja section, Vaisnava section and also from the brahmin class. There was one disciple of Gopal Bhatta who's name was Harivamsa, he was a little different type something like sahajiya, he was seen one day to chow betal nuts on Ekadasi fasting day but objection was raised by other disciples of Gopal Bhatta against him, there godbrother Harivamsa and there was some quarrel. It is said that he got some support from Prabhodanada, because Prabhodananda wrote many Sanskrit books, Vrindavan sataka, Navadvip sataka, Radha Rasa sudhanidhi one famost book in praise of Radharani. These books are very much appreciated by that section Harivamsi how came from Harivamsa. Harivamsa was a disciple of Gopal Bhatta but with some differences, with a little slackness.

Yesterday was also disappearance of Ramacandra Kaviraj.

Ramacandra Kaviraj was a disciple of Srinivas Acarya, we have told that he had a very beautiful figure and beautiful mind also. He had one house near by Narottam Thakur. On the right site by the river was the residence of Ramacandra Kaviraj and elder brother Govinda Kaviraj and on left site Narottam Thakur. Govinda Kaviraj was a devotee of Sakti and Ramacandra was a devotee of Krishna he asked Govinda Kaviraj to hear about the Grace of Krishna but he did not give his ear to that. But lastly when he almost died he prayed permanently to his worshipped Deity, ÔPlease give me salvation' but it is told that the Deity told, "I have no right to give liberation, I can give different enjoyment of this world but not emancipation or liberation from this world, then who can give it? Only Krishna, Narayana can give that'. Then he asked her permission to do that. Then Govinda Kaviraja was disappointed began his prayer to Narayana, Govinda. There is valuable song commonly chanted ÔBhaja hure mana Sri Nanda NandanaÉ' then he began worship the Deity that was very much adore by his younger brother Ramacandra Kaviraj.-

Ramacandra Kaviraj has got Bengali poems and has got Sanskrit writings also that was sent to Jiva Gosvami and he gave his appreciation's to Ramacandra Kaviraj and Govinda Kaviraj.

Ramacandra Kaviraj was very friendly to Narattam Thakur, they lived on two sides of the same river and some times Ramacandra Kaviraj went to meet him, sometimes Narottam use to come to Ramacandra Kaviraj, very friendly. Srinivas Acarya was in the same rank and friendly to Narottam and in that connection Narottam had much affection to Ramacandra Kaviraj, his nephew in spiritual relation.-

Goura Hari Bol.
