August 16, 2002 VNN7464 City To Surf Bhajans
BY CHITTAHARI CALENDAR, Aug 16 (VNN) Back in the 1980's many people in Sydney thought 'The Hare Krishnas' ran the 'City to Surf' fun run.
We used to greet the 40,000 runners at the entrance to the Kings Cross tunnel with a roaring kirtan of sixty to one hundred chanters. Then we would jump into vans and race them to Bondi Beach.
When the runners arrived exhausted we would give them delicious oranges to quench their thirst. These became so popular that the main sponsors,Staminade, could not distribute their free drinks. All the atheletes were looking for 'Hare Krishnas' and their 'heavenly oranges'.
Eventually the organisers begged us to distribute all the refreshments and asked if we could also 'bless' their staminade.(probably to make it drinkable)
Unfortunately in the 90's this tradition was stopped and the 250,000 people who go to Bondi Beach on that day have not been hearing any sankirtan or received any Krishna Prasad. This year however bhajans will again appear at the south end of Bondi beach at 11am on "City to Surf" day,11th August 2002.If you live in or near Sydney please don't miss this one.
